The Phototropic Sensitivity of Phycomyces as Related to Wave-length

چکیده

Under the circumstances of experimentation described, the sporangiophores of Phycomyces are found to be most sensitive to stimulation by light in the violet between 400 and 430 mmicro. Toward the red, sensitivity falls to nearly zero near 580 mmicro, while in the near ultra-violet around 370 mmicro, sensitivity is still high. The previous experiments of Blaauw had placed the point of greatest sensitivity some 80 mmicro nearer the red end of the spectrum. Because of the known presence in the sporangiophores of Phycomyces of "accessory" pigments, care must be taken in identifying such results with the absorption spectrum of the photosensitive substance.

Steady-State Phototropism in Phycomyces

The steady-state phototropic bending of Phycomyces sporangiophores was studied using apparatus designed to keep the growing zone vertical and the angle of illumination constant over long periods of time. The bending speed is quite constant if the intensity and angle of illumination are fixed. A phototropic inversion occurs in response to a sudden change in intensity, either an increase or a dec...

Phototropic Curvature in Phycomyces

The distribution of curvature and of bending speed along the cell's growing region are studied during steady state phototropic bending. At the start, elemental bending speed parallels the known axial distribution of growth rate. Hence regional phototropic sensitivity is initially determined by the local growth rate, and unilateral visible light acts proportionally at all levels of the growth zo...

The Phycomyces madA gene encodes a blue-light photoreceptor for phototropism and other light responses.

Phycomyces blakesleeanus is a filamentous zygomycete fungus that produces striking elongated single cells that extend up to 10 cm into the air, with each such sporangiophore supporting a sphere containing the spores for dispersal. This organism has served as a model for the detection of environmental signals as diverse as light, chemicals, touch, wind, gravity, and adjacent objects. In particul...

Wavelength Dependence of Dark Adaptation in Phycomyces Phototropism PAUL GALLAND

The wavelength dependence of phototropic dark adaptation in Phycomyces was studied between 347 and 545 nm. Dark adaptation kinetics were measured for wavelengths of 383, 409, 477, and 507 nm in the intensity range from 6.2 x 10-2 to 2 x 10-7 W. tri2. At these wavelengths, dark adaptation follows a biexponential decay as found previously with broadband blue light (Russo, V. E. A., and P. Galland...
